Help for New Geocachers #1 - Muggles

This is the first article is what will slowly develop into a series on Geocaching meant to help the "newbies" (New Geocachers) as they slowly start to get out there and find those ever elusive Geocaches.

As a matter of introduction, SNAP!!! stands for Suffolk Nana and Papa.  Suffolk is the city in Virginia in which we live and Nana is my wife of 37 years and we have been caching since June of 2009.  Oh, and by the way... I am Papa.  We have over 7000 finds in 24 states.  We have also given classes on "Beginning Geocaching" for our local Library's summer program.

So, what is a muggle?  Although the word has other miscellaneous meanings, it was used in the Harry Potter book series to mean "one who lacks any sort of magical ability and was not born into the magical world."  In geocaching we modify that term to define any person who is a non-geocacher.  Usually this term is used after a non geocacher looks puzzled after befriending a geocacher searching for a cache, or when a non-geocacher accidentally finds a cache.  Muggles are mostly harmless although they can sometimes appear in the form of a "LEO" which is a "Law Enforcement Officer."
probably not a muggle
If your muggle takes the form of a Law Enforcement officer of any type, our advice would be to tell the truth.  Ask the officer if he/she has ever heard of geocaching.  I usually follow that question up with "Would you like to help us look for it?" which usually (stress on usually) invokes a smile on their behalf.  I will admit though that we usually carry with a magazine or two that talks about geocaching to legitimize our story just in case the officer has never heard of it.

Just a few days ago we were down in the Edenton, NC area looking for what turned out to be a "nano" (an unusually small geocache) on the sign of a business that was closed.  As we were standing there looking at this sign a local sheriff pulled up to ask us if everything was OK?  I walked over and asked him if he knew what geocaching was, explained to him there was supposed to be a geocache on or near this sign and we were having trouble finding it.  Although he declined to help us, he had heard of geocaching and was in the middle of telling me a story about a call he had received concerning a geocache under a picnic table.  In the middle of the story he received a call he had to go attend to.  He wished us well and we eventually did find the cache.

Another example of muggle activity also occurred that same day teenagers and a walking path between an old trailer park and a shopping center.  As we pulled up in the shopping center to get a cache we realized the cache general location was exactly where a small group of teenagers were hanging out.  We waited about 10 minutes waiting to see if they would move on or just continue hanging out but they looked like they were set up to stay for quite a long time.  Instead of looking for the cache and perhaps compromising its location.  We elected to save that cache for another day.  That way we did not draw unwanted attention to the cache which might cause it to disappear or be trashed.

Sometimes unplanned muggles attack the location at the worst time!  Nana & I had found this one cache and to keep prying eyes from noticing us, we took the container back to our vehicle (about 40 feet away) to sign the log and trade "swag" (the trinkets inside the cache).  While we were in the van, a group appeared and sat down near "GZ" (ground zero) and rested.  Needless to say we could not return the cache to its hiding place.  Lucky for us the group moved on in about 15 minutes.  We made sure the coast was clear before replacing the cache where we had found it and then proceeded on to the next cache.

Muggles can be frustrating sometimes.  But if you are having trouble getting to a cache because of muggles, try a different time of day or even a different day of the week.  Muggles are part of the game.

In conclusion,
1) If caught by LEOs - tell the truth
2) Do not attempt a cache if it is surrounded by muggles, save it for another day.
3) Do not move the cache to another location, just out-wait the muggles then return it to its correct location.
4) Muggles are part of the game, play nicely with them.

I hope this information helps some of the newer cachers out there.  We always welcome newer cachers and urge them to ask questions.  There are plenty of places to get your questions answered.  You can search for local events in your area or even look for local groups such as GCHR (Geocaching Hampton Roads) here where we live.  If you can't find anyone to ask, please feel free to e-mail us or leave us a comment here on this blog and I will get back to you personally.

Top 10 Caches in Newport News Virginia

With the 13th Annual GCHR Picnic fast approaching, I figured I would put together several lists detailing the best caches around the area.  Today's list will be the best caches, based on favorite points, in the City of Newport News.

The red dot (next to the "Y" in York) is the approximate location of the picnic.

For more information on the picnic - click here

City of Newport News – top 10 caches based on favorite points earned:

1. GC1N3Y0 – I SEE SPIDERMAN – 78 favorite points - hidden by ibwacko and Nuckfuts then adopted by tax-man.  This cache won the GOLD Award for Most Creative/Innovate Cache during the 3rd Annual Hidey Awards on February 6, 2010 and was admitted to the Geocaching Hampton Roads (GCHR) Hall of Fame on February 4, 2012 at the 5th Annual Hidey Awards.   This is a great cache and is located 9.64 miles from Newport News Park.
Note from SNAP!!!: Tricky little devil of a cache but worth the 78 favorite points

2.  GC2A496 – This Little Piggy Went Wii Wii Wii... – 75 favorite points - hidden by seepaulgolf and adopted by chihuahuak94me.  This very popular cache is located at a shopping center Newport News Park almost 6 miles from the park.

3.  GC55KEH – Don't Let This Birdhouse Send You To The Nut House – 70 favorite points - hidden by Kemallor.  This cache is just south of the park.  This cache can be a little challenging for some cachers but do not let that scare you.  A cache does not earn 70 favorite points by being an easy park 'n grab.  Located just over 7 miles south from the park.
Note from SNAP!!!:  If you have done some gadget caches, this one MIGHT be familiar.  Well worth the visit!

4.  GC1HB4T – Ghost Train: Next Stop Boxwood Inn – 67 favorite points – hidden by Zazth@CO and adopted by BillHSKC.  With the ongoing restoration of the train station on one side and the Boxwood Inn on the other, the CO felt this to be an ideal location for a cache. Yes, the tracks here are still active just not in the same respect as they were many years ago. This area holds a lot of history and is less than 2 miles north of Newport News Park.
Note from SNAP!!!: Loved not only the cache but the area.  Plenty of history here.

5.  GC112TG – Rattle Fish – 65 favorite points - hidden by 2 Unusual Suspects and adopted by 5 Lost Marbles.  This cache is located right in Newport News Park.  This is a small cache located off a trail behind the Newport  News Information Center at Newport News City Park.  Bring your geocaching fishing gear (3ft of strong string with a loop tied on one end) because the rattle fish are in season. Be sure to use the "catch and release" method as we want to make sure that there will be a fish for others to catch. Please release it back where you caught it.
Note from SNAP!!!: Tricky little devil of a cache but worth the 78 favorite points

6.  GC3A5X2 – The Last Crusade – 57 favorite points – hidden by Scottish Calvaryman and adopted by Bad_Wolfe.  This is a multi-cache located right inside Newport News Park.  A great multi and one of four caches with an Indiana Jones Theme located in or near the park.  I guarantee you will remember this cache!

7.    GC2NAND – Very Deceptive Or Tricky – 47 favorite points – hidden by bigbearpaw.  This could be considered a Park n Grab cache but be warned – this one is a little tricky!  Located about 7 miles from Newport News Park just off of Jefferson Ave.

Geo-Art in Virginia

This page was updated May 11 2016 - this information is current!!!

So, you are thinking of coming to the 14th Annual GCHR Picnic.
Good, we welcome everyone - the more the merrier!
You want to know some of the best caches in the area to find while you are here.
Great!   Over the next several weeks I will be publishing blogs with exactly that information.  ou can get to all of this information by clicking on the "14th ANNUAL GCHR PICNIC" page on the right hand side of this blog near the top of the page

Today's we will cover the Geo-Art that is in our area as well as those in the state of Virginia.

Closest to the picnic is:
Star Trek Geo-Art, (GC5DK78) created and maintained by Kemallor.  This geo-art contains 61 individual caches.  This series can easily be accomplished in one day once you have all your answers and have mapped out the best route to take.  Most of the caches are micro pre-forms and should be simple park n grabs.  Please read the rules on each cache page but most of all - Have FUN!

Note from SNAP!!! - a really fun series that can easily be done in 4 hours depending on traffic

Just south of Star Trek is:
VTCC Geo-Art, (GC52E1Z) created and maintained by Kemallor.  This geo-art contains 21 individual caches.  This series can easily be accomplished in just a couple of hours once you have all your answers and have mapped out the best route to take.  Most of the caches in this series are small home-made bison tubes.  Have FUN!

Note from SNAP!!! - another nice series, plan your route, very fast series on the weekend

For more of a challenge
Head east from the picnic and cross the Coleman Bridge in Gloucester:

Just north of Gloucester is the Beaver Trail Geo-art surrounding Beaver Dam Lake, (GC50FDG) was created and maintained by the Rivahcntrygeocachers.  This geo-art contains 50 individual caches a few of which are water caches.  This series will take most if not all of one day to accomplish.  Make sure you have all your answers and proper coordinates mapped out.  It is suggested that you take two cars, park one at the rear entrance and then go back to the main entrance, park the other vehicle there and start your hike.  There is a great variety of sizes and containers in this series.  Have FUN!

Note from SNAP!!! - use the 2 car method and bring plenty of water.  Beautiful hike.

Head an hour south-west from the picnic and head towards Suffolk:

SNAP!!!-land Geo-graffiti, (GC503GY) created and maintained by me - a.k.a. - - - SNAP!!!  This geo-art contains 100 individual caches and is currently the largest Geo-art in Virginia.  Once you have your answers and all the corrected coordinates, just do the series in numerical order and everything should work out fine.  I have seen this series done in 4-5 hours but plan on 5-7.  Please read the rules on each page.  Most of the caches in this series are pre-forms.  Have FUN!

Note from SNAP!!! - kinda biased here as this is our series but can be done in 6 hours.

That is all the Geo-art in the area but Virginia also has:

Tobacco Heritage Trail, (GC568W2) created and maintained by ththider.  This geo-art contains 60 individual caches.  This series is about 2.5 hours west of Hampton Roads or just East of I-85 in Brunswick county.  There is a good variety of caches in this series and they are located along a very nice Rails-to-Trails hiking/biking trail.  Along with the 60 caches in the series there are other caches along the way in addition to 5 bonus caches to go along with the series.

Note from SNAP!!! - a 2 car method would work great here also.  Lovely hike.  Very nice variety of hides.

Another hour or so west:
Virginia Star, (GC5A6VA) created and maintained by Nocona 1.  This geo-art contains 50 individual caches.  This series is about 3.5 - 4 hours west of Hampton Roads or just East of Danville, VA.  This series is in rural Pittsylvania County on the Ringgold Rail Trail where the old Richmond & Danville Railway ran. You'll pass through wooded areas, through wetlands and over a five arch stone bridge, all on a 5.6 mile long, finely graveled walking/biking path.  I can't really give you an estimate on how long it takes as this art is next on our to-do list!

Note from SNAP!!! - As stated above, this is the only geo-art we have not done in Virginia but we here it is a great series and a very nice hike.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the picnic.  Please stop by my booth which will feature local geocaching information as well as handouts for GSAK.  GSAK is a very nice program that lets you have numerous databases all in one program and has plenty of add-ons for all sorts of geocaching information.

Till then....

The final recap of our "GeoWoodstock13 and more" trip

If you have been reading the last 7 blogs you know all about our 9 day trip we call our "GeoWoodstick and more" trip.

Each day of the trip we had a mission or Target we hoped to achieve.  As it ended up, we achieved each and everyone of our Targets.

We found quite a lot of older caches and managed to fill in quite a lot of squares in out statistics.

During the 9 days we found a total of 158 caches.
1 MEGA event (of course)
1 CITO event
5 events
2 Multi caches
10 Lab caches
8 Earth caches
8 Mystery caches
12 Virtual caches
2 Web Cams
109 Traditionals

then add to that 4 Benchmarks!

What a trip - we also added Ohio to our state finds!

We had a glorious time and even though we found that many caches - - - both Nana & I are in agreement on the best cache of the trip:    GCT297 - Train Trestle Falls

There was another cache though that deserves a great mention - - GC799B - - Tie a yellow ribbon - - it is a virtual located at an old church but the surprise is the Oak Tree that is on the property.  The tree is over 600 years old and the circumference is over 18 feet.

Nana & I had a glorious time and it was a shame to have to return to work!
Hope to see everyone at the Picnic!
Don't forget the upcoming 13th Annual GCHR Picnic coming up on September 5 this year.  I will be there with a booth full of local information on geocaching, geocaches and local info.  I will have information on GSAK.  GSAK is a wonderful database-like program for organizing all your geocaching information.

Hope to see y'all out on the trails and maybe at the upcoming picnic!!!  Check out the new page just for the picnic on the right hand side of this blog!!!  It has links to a bunch of stuff I am writing.

Till then....
